Introducing EUMETSAT data access services

As part of an evolution to its Data Access Services, in 2021 EUMETSAT released the Data Access Services which provide new capabilities to users. These Data Access Services comprise the EUMETSAT Data Tailor, EUMETSAT Data Store, EUMETView, the EUMETCast Terrestrial system and the European Weather Cloud. EUMETCast Satellite and Terrestrial

EUMETCast is EUMETSAT’s primary dissemination mechanism for the near real-time delivery of satellite data and products, delivering a wide range of products through a multi-service “push” dissemination system based on multicast technology. The EUMETCast Terrestrial service augments the existing EUMETCast Satellite service, using the terrestrial National Research and Education Network (NREN) and GÉANT infrastructure as a delivery mechanism.

EUMETSAT Data Centre

The EUMETSAT Data Centre provides a state-of-the-art, long-term archive of data and generated products from EUMETSAT, guaranteeing their preservation. It supports all EUMETSAT satellites, including Meteosat, Metop, Jason-2, Jason-3, and Copernicus Sentinel-3, as well as data from the Satellite Application Facilities (SAFs) and international partners.

The Data Centre catalogue contains over 5 petabytes of data, spanning over 300 products, and provides users with tools to browse the catalogue, make automated orders, and retrieve data. Orders are delivered either via a HTTP server, or on physical media. Information on the products contained within the Data Centre can be found on the EUMETSAT product navigator.

EUMETSAT Data Store (and Data Tailor Web Service)

The EUMETSAT Data Store provides users with a download and data tailoring service for online data. Users can discover, apply customisation changes via the DTWS (format transformations, regional sub-setting, file aggregation, etc.) and download data. The service provides access through an online interface and via Application Programming Interface (API). This service offers a subset of EUMETSAT data from the Meteosat First and Second Generation and Metop satellite missions.

EUMETSAT Standalone Data Tailor

The EUMETSAT Data Tailor software makes it possible for users to subset and aggregate our data products in space and time, filter layers, generate quicklooks, project onto new coordinate reference systems, and reformat into common GIS formats (netCDF, GeoTIFF, etc.). It offers a uniform way to transform both historical and near real time satellite data provided by EUMETSAT.

EUMETView is an Online Map Service that provides visualizations of EUMETSAT products through a customisable web user interface and an enhanced set of Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standard APIs. EUMETView makes it is possible to create and save maps using the user interface, or integrates with user's personal service, via the API.

European Weather Cloud

The European Weather Cloud (EWC) pilot provides users with a federated cloud platform that can currently be accessed for the purpose of implementing, testing and demonstrating use cases. The service is jointly operated by ECMWF and EUMETSAT, and is focused on the needs of the meteorological community; building on the expertise and meteorological data owned by the two organisations.
